Romantic Danube & Prague
Five countries in ten days, with one cabin to unpack in for the week and palaces, abbeys and vineyards right outside your window.
This is the river cruise I'd suggest to anyone who wants to see Central Europe without the packing and unpacking. Your ship docks close to the heart of each town, so most days begin with a short walk or a guided tour rather than a long coach ride.
Starting in Budapest gives you one of the most beautiful arrivals in Europe, especially with the Parliament lit up at night. Ending with two hotel nights in Prague adds a final city that the river itself doesn't reach.
The sample itinerary
Depart for Europe
Fly overnight from Orlando, usually with one connection. I'll choose the routing and help you pick seats.
Arrive and board your ship
A private or line-arranged transfer takes you to the ship. Settle in, then take an after-dinner stroll on deck under the city lights.
The Pearl of the Danube
See Buda Castle, Fisherman's Bastion and the Parliament on a guided tour. Spend the afternoon at the Great Market Hall or a thermal bath.
Two capitals in one day
Walk Bratislava's Old Town below its hilltop castle, then sail on to Vienna for the evening.
Imperial Vienna
Tour the Ringstrasse and St. Stephen's Cathedral, with free time for Schönbrunn Palace, a coffeehouse or an evening concert.
Vineyards and Melk Abbey
Sail one of the prettiest stretches of the Danube, past terraced vineyards and the town of Dürnstein, and visit the magnificent Baroque abbey at Melk.
A day trip to Salzburg
Take a full-day excursion to Mozart's birthplace and the Alpine scenery around it, or stay close to the river and explore Linz.
Across the border to Czechia
Explore Passau's old town and its cathedral, then leave the ship and travel by motorcoach to your hotel in Prague.
The city of a hundred spires
See Prague Castle, Charles Bridge and the Astronomical Clock with a local guide, then enjoy a free evening in the Old Town.
Fly home
A transfer to the airport and your flight home, with a head full of stories and a phone full of photos.
Choosing your season
The Danube is lovely for most of the year, but each season has a different personality.
Mild days, blossoms and fewer visitors than summer. Pack a light rain jacket.
Warm evenings on deck and long days. It's also the busiest and hottest time in the cities.
My pick for many travelers: comfortable weather, autumn color and the grape harvest in the Wachau.
Cold but magical, with festive markets in Budapest, Vienna and Passau. These sailings fill up early.

Before you go
- Your passport should be valid at least six months past your return, as most cruise lines require; I'll confirm the current entry rules
